Text to Image in InDesign CC

File > Text to Image

Access the power of Adobe Firefly to fill any frame with generative photo/artwork in InDesign. To open the sample file in the video above – go to helpx.adobe.com

Bring up the Text to Image panel from the File menu, Window menu or if you already have a frame selected, simply click the button in the Properties panel or Contextual Task Bar, then type something in the Prompt field or note that the panel includes ‘Sample Prompts’ if you’d like an editable starting point.

The ‘Advanced’ button opens a larger dialog box that resembles many of the options in the ‘Generate Image’ area of the Firefly app.

The ‘Aspect Ratio’ pop-up will include a ‘Frame dimensions’ option (if you selected the frame first) along with the usual options. Set your content type to ‘Photo’ or ‘Art’, plus the additional ability to upload a ‘Reference Image’ or include specific ‘Style Effects’.

Note: Be sure to check the ‘Effective PPI’ in the Links panel. Images are usually generated at 72 ppi, then scaled down to create a higher effective PPI. If resolution isn’t acceptable, consider editing the original in Photoshop 2026 and using Generative Upscale.

Also note the location of the linked file (username/Documents/InDesign GenAI Assets). All InDesign AI-generated content (including unused variations) are currently saved to this folder.
