Retype in Illustrator 2026
Type > Retype
Once type has been converted to outlines, traditionally there hasn’t been a way of knowing what font was used (unless a copy of the editable text was on the pasteboard). With some outlined text selected, go to the above command and the panel will be populated with Adobe Sensei’s best guess as to what font was used.
There are buttons to ‘Add’ the font via Creative Cloud or make it a Favourite. Your only option after finding the font is to hit the ‘Exit’ button at the bottom of the panel. At this point, you have to RETYPE the text you’d like to apply this found font to, then click the font name in the panel to apply.
When this was a Beta feature, there was an ‘Apply’ button that would convert the outlined type into editable type, but this aspect of the feature has been removed. Apparently, Adobe is working on a new, distinct feature called “Un-Outline” that will have this functionality.
